Licensed Practical Nurse (School Nurse) – 2025–2026 School Year – In-Person

Ampersand Therapy is hiring a caring and dedicated Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for the 2025–2026 school year! This is a full-time, in-person position within a supportive school environment, providing direct care and assistance to students with health and medical needs throughout the school day.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for assisting district nurses and the Health Services Coordinator with a variety of health-related tasks. The LPN will work both in the school health office and in general or special education settings, providing support to one or more students with significant disabilities or medical needs.

Responsibilities may include assisting with toileting, feeding, following individualized healthcare plans, collaborating with the building nurse or Health Services Coordinator, and providing lifting or mobility support when needed. The role also includes providing general health office support and performing other medical services as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Assist building nurses and the Health Services Coordinator in a variety of health-related tasks.

  • Collaborate with the building nurse to implement and follow student health care plans.

  • Provide direct support to students with significant disabilities or medical needs within classrooms and around the school building.

  • Assist with communication, scheduling, and implementation of individualized health service plans.

  • Support the delivery of health services to students and staff under the direction of the building nurse or Health Services Coordinator.

  • Assess the health and developmental status of assigned students as directed.

  • Work cooperatively with the School Assessment Team to identify health needs that may affect learning.

  • Ensure compliance with immunization and Illinois Department of Public Health regulations.

  • Supervise and follow proper medication administration procedures.

  • Provide adequate care for ill or injured students.

  • Offer health counseling to students and parents when appropriate.

  • Comply with laws and district policies related to suspected child abuse or neglect.

  • Attend health services staff meetings and professional development sessions.

  • Assist in planning and organizing health services goals under the direction of the Principal or Assistant Principal.

  • Perform additional duties as requested by the Principal or Assistant Principal.

Qualifications

  • Active Illinois Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license required (issued by IDFPR).

  • Current CPR and First Aid certification required.

  • A recent physical exam and negative TB test are required.

  • Experience working with children or students with medical needs preferred.

  • Strong understanding of health/medical materials, documentation, and procedures.

  • Initiative to follow through with assigned health and care plans.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organization skills.

  • Ability to maneuver and safely support students with mobility or health-related needs.

  • Must serve as a positive role model for students and staff and contribute to a safe, inclusive learning environment.
